I like this idea. We just need a big balloon...or how about a blimp. Attach some wind turbines to it somehow. Have a certain percentage of the power go to heating elements inside the blimp to keep the air inside hot enough to keep it afloat. Any energy beyond that would flow down wires to the ground (it would have to be tethered of course).
Now I just need a blimp. Anyone got a blimp they want to give away?
I have to admit, I did steal the idea from a show a while back that focused on "saving the planet". They actually built one. The either thing (even the turbine) was the balloon. So one balloon spun in the middle, and on each side was other balloons (I'm guessing tethering it and holding the generators.) It was COLOSSAL! I loved the idea though.
That's the problem with a lot of people when they think about "green" energy. People who want to make money off of it try to build HUGE things that'll power a small town. When in reality, if people mass-marketed things the everyday person would use (easily) to power their own home, they'd probably be much more successful.
