Alternate Energies Project

Postby FussyCashew » Mon May 30, 2011 3:20 pm

I am working on creating an open-source project where people who want to go "off the grid" or limit their grid use and lower the amount of their daily non renewable resources and pollutants can collaborate and work on making the world greener! I have little to no fund at most times, and try to work with what I have. Current projects include, a wind turbine to power the majority of my workshop, and solar panels for lighting in my room. If you have any other ideas, know a lot about solar energies, wind energies, or any other renewable resources as well as want to join in on this project, post comments and stay updated as I plan to use this thread to keep followers updated. I will hopefully get some videos posted on Vimeo too. :D

Well at this time i could suggest Permaculture. Its a very interesting subject. I would assume that you are a green person so it would go hand in hand. lol
You've read this, you cannot un-read it.

I love the idea of wind power, however you really have to live in an area where it is useful. For example, I live in the middle of a valley that is shielded from almost all wind. So it's useless for me. It's kinda the same way with solar power. Don't they work optimally between certain latitudes?

I mean, if we could build a floating balloon with a wind turbine on it, that'd be AWESOME. Cause there's always wind currents in the sky right?

I would like to put up a turbine to power my house grid free (as much as pos anyway) but I don't own it at the moment ( my house) so need to wait a while to sort that out first. I am looking at a 15 kw 16.5 meter high jobbie. :D not gonna make that myself. But.... I am planning on having my greenhouse fully DIY renewables. wind power too I think. Car batteries etc.

True to the Jamius clan. :ugeek:

I will try and keep you all posted.

this only vaguely fits in here, but i had a idea recetly.
I'm shure everyone here has heard of electric eels, and i know that they use their charges for certain medical procedures.
I thought that if someone could isolate the individual type of cell or gland that does that then i could harness their power.
idk if itll work. just a though.

Other thoughts: i thought of this while trying to think of a VERY long lasting and very poweful battery/ mobile power source for a power suit i saw in popular science.

Ehhhh.... harnessing animals for energy will only lead to animal cruelty. And I don't think it'd work anyway. I think mythbusters did something on it once?

Wow I got a lot of responses over night! Today I plan on getting my first project done, and in the sense of "starting small"... It is a small weather resistant case with a small 6v solar panel in it, I will use this to charge 2 AA 1.5v batteries. I really love the idea of a floaty wind turbine, and the electric eel thing... What if we contained the eels (within a fish tank) with a positive and negative copper panel submerged, then used the water as a conductor, thus converting the fish tank in to one giant battery! But I have two problems with this, the amount of voltage and current the eel produces, as well as the fact that you would have to harass the poor eel(s) to get them to produce a shock. Geothermal energies are awesome, but I cant go tearing up my back yard, and solar heat wouldn't be enough... Although making my water heater a black cylinder on the roof might be an option. Finally, I will look into permaculture, but my main goal is to limit my use of energies generated by non renewable resources, and as most of the energy on "THE ALMIGHTY GRID THAT EVERYONE SHOULD USE, SO FAT CATS MAKE MONEY" runs off of coal plants. And carbon is not good to be pumping into the atmosphere like it is...

Oh forgot to mention, mounting a little generator on my Gazelle, and putting into effect a normal workout routine = ENERGY PLUS MUSCHLES! :D:D:D

I've always been interested in geothermal energy. I haven't done much research on it, but it sounds like a pretty renewable way to get energy? I mean the earth is always warm under ground.
