Scrapheap Challenge/Junkyard wars

SO, ya... be nice. We don't all have to agree about what the world should be like. I personally think the world should be an awesome place. :-)
....and no offense to anyone, but please keep the bible thumping out of it. I'm just not up to explaining how incredibly stastitically improbably it is that the earth is 6000-ish years old.

Scrapheap Challenge/Junkyard wars

I dunno if this belongs in this section but I reckon these programs definitely made the world a better place. If you didn't catch em when they were on a quick youtube search should give you some idea of what it was about.

A quick run-down; Two teams of four battle it out in a huge scrap yard to create machines that perform certain tasks, one week they'll be tasked with building a machine that can fly across dunes, the next week a different two teams would be tasked with building a machine that can knock down walls all using parts/vehicles from machines all destined to be crushed. The teams were divided into 4 people, 2 scavengers, 1 Expert and 1 team captain.

Now, on to the fun part.
If you had to take part in SHC or JYW who would your team be, and just to make it more interesting, why?
I reckon you should be able to choose people who are no longer with us too, that way maybe someone will have Einstein as their expert or something! =P Maybe tell us what your teams speciality would be, like what challenge would they excel at the most.

Example:
Team captain: Isiah Mustafa (Old Spice guy) I reckon if anyone can get a team motivated, its this guy. THE SCRAPHEAP IS NOW DIAMONDS.
Expert: Jeri Elsworth, I wouldn't trust a lot of people to design something that could potentially kill me.
Scavenger one: Knux - Surely the reasons for this choice are obvious =P I'd love a good rummage on a junkyard. Bring some of that scrap back to life!
Scavenger two: Mr T, he's huge. Imagine what kind of junk he could shift if he needed to.

Obviously someone like Jamie on side would be a huge advantage too but I imagine a few people will see him as part of their team.

I think this team would be good for any kind of brute force challenge, I can't see Mr T contributing to something like mobile bridge building but I could be wrong. Tearing down a building and racing for the finish line with some technical as battering ram Elsworth style would be awesome.
I dunno if this is gonna take off but I can hope right =P
Peace!

I LOVED junkyard wars.

Eventually they ran out of ideas though and it started getting stupid.

I also loved monster garage. Similar, but no foraging for parts. Just a budget to stay on.

Ya, I liked those shows a lot too. One thing i found annoying, though, was how they tried to make it "exciting" be having people be against eachother, and making everyone rush like crazy.

I'd be more intereted in seeing competant people simply building something thats next to impossible. ...and they can keep all their ego's, and posturing out of it. That stuff is pointless to me.

Oh, but my team would be me, my brother, and a clone of me, and a clone of my brother. We wouldn't have designated job, but I'd be the leader.

At the end, it would go something like this...

...and here we have Banana's team. They'ver created a pretty cool looking auger. They seem to think they can drill down to 10' in under an hour.

Jaimie's Team... what have you.... oh my... uhh.. it appears that Jaimie's team is riding off into the sunset on some sort of giant walking fortress. I'd protest, but it apprears they have some sort of catapult aimed in this direction. Oh no! They're firing! AAAAA! Run!!!! blam!!!!! sizzle....
Wait... it looks like as a parting gift, they've made a 40' hole in about 1 second. It that cheating???

I love shows like this, as well as the Colony. The Colony turned me off a little during the second season when they went overboard having looters rob the colonists. I also like Dual Survival and Out of the Wild. Gold Rush was okay, but a lot of that was scripted. Mythbusters is always a favorite. Robot Wars was cool, although got old once everyone figured out the spinners or the wedges always win.

I like reality shows that teach you something and make you think about what you would do. Stuff like Survivor is pure crap. It is just a test to see who is the best liar.

As for the rush Jaimie mentions, I am not crazy about that at all. It doesn't make any sense and is counter to what you should do when designing. Take the time to think stuff through and you will save yourself a lot of time in the long run and end up with a better design.

Yeah I know what you're saying about the competitive thing, although a little healthy competition is good every now and then and I reckon a lot of the American versions rivalry was scripted but only because the team captains were re-occurring. some of the machines they made were just incredible though. Like on the anniversary of flight the three teams, Britain, USA and France all build AIRCRAFT! It was incredible, and the best one could fly around for ages, the guy flying it didn't wanna come down! Out of junkyard parts!!!

There was often a lot of teams helping each other out too though, and that always felt good =D

I really wish they'd bring it back now, could you imagine, The A.B.C. Junkyard Challenge, SIGN ME UP! =P

I really liked survivor man. Great show. I liked how he was ACTUALLY surviving, with no camera crew, no nothing. Sure it was a bit boring sometimes, but if you've ever tried to film yourself doing something... it's annoying!

I'm in the middle of watching season 2 of the colony now. I actually don't like it (as much). Season one had mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, doctors, scientists. They build tesla coils and solar arrays and battery powered trikes. Season two has construction workers, loggers, mechanics, an artist, a model, an anatomy professor. They built a windmill and halfway through the show they still don't have any security. Season one was so much cooler. I mean... a freaking tesla coil?

*Spoiler alert* I HATED how they kidnapped the one girl, then showed it OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER again. I felt so helpless and I wanted to beat the living crap out of the people who did it. If I were them, I would have went gorilla style and hijacked the truck that they brought her back in. They could have easily snuck up by the canal and jumped in the passenger's side of the truck. A big sword and a face shield vs. mace... sword always wins. Then I would have chased them away trying to run them over with the truck. The colonists they won't get hurt, so why not try? *End Spoiler alert*

Survivor man is great, better than Man vs. Wild. Survivor man real is surviving. Man vs Wild always has company.

Dual Survival is cool, although most of the time they give them what they need to make fire.

Most of the TV shows I like these days are like this. They are people doing stuff rather than competing.

I agree completely! I'm not even starting on season 2. I'm not at all surprised about the spoiler alert, they always have to make a good show bad in the second season by going over the limit. If that tesla coil actually works very good for purifying water, I might have one on the bus :D
