climbing gym

So I was over in Halifax NS before my vacation picking up passports (stupid PEI doesn't have a passport office) and while there my wife and I hung out with an old friend for the afternoon and he took us to a climbing gym he goes to all the time. It's a smallish commercial space with large ceilings in an industrial strip mall and just has walls with plywaood and climbing holds all over it. They even built a "cave" and outcroppings for some overhead climbing.

It was a blast and now we think we might build ourselves a climbing gym/workshop in our house. We always were intending to building an outbuilding/workshop at some point and now we think we'll make it bigger and add a couple climbing walls too!

Sounds like a fun project! There are a lot of construction and how-to videos on youtube. I'd like to build one of these down the road as well.

I keep thinking of a geodesic dome frame as climbing gym. It could work.

Hey check out http://www.traversewall.com/products/treadwalls.shtml

They are expensive but it would be a cool project to try and build one yourself.

Pretty cool but making difficult short routes say 12' high is actually quite a workout in itself. It's called "bouldering".

Yeah, the second I saw greenspre's post, I was thinking "oh man, this is the PERFECT use for a dome". Using Jaimie's materials/technique, you could build a tall dome cheaply. Add a sami-transparent tarp-style covering like Jaimie had for protection and solar warmth; then you just need to build the climbing wall somehow.

I think Jaimie should put a climbing wall along the window side of his dome (opposite the new stairs). It would be a great alternate method to reach the trampoline level :-)

A tower structure with a dome top maybe, but for vertical walls I think conventional construction would be perfectly suitable, lumber is cheap and stick framing is easy.

I do have an idea for a geodesic dome on my property but it's not for a climbing gym!

Don't underestimate the joy of monkey bars. Plenty of exercise.

Test your big dome design by building a smaller one as a climbing gym for the kids! And if you have no kids, then build it as a shed for the garden tools or whatever.

Woo, nice. Ya, I've been planning on putting some climbing wall stuff up in the dome. Starting on the 1st floor, duming upside down on the 3rd floor, and going right up to the 4th... mega super secret room. :-)
