San Francisco chapter reporting in!

I try to wear my shirt around town and tell friends -- or anyone who asks -- about the club. I think it's an awesome idea!

Now I just need to build some stuff and post some pictures/stories here. My daughter wants a shirt too; so I'll have to save up and buy another one soon -- the new shirts are great.

Nice to meet you guys. I'm in Colorado, and it's good to know there are other people out there actually doing things other than watching TV and shopping.

Cool! So like.... this may be a stupid question, but... what does the San Fancisco chapter consist of?

Well, it's pretty much me (Mark) and my 4 year old daughter (Sky) at the moment...my wife isn't so much into building stuff. Although she is an excellent cook! So I guess she builds food (which I appreciate immensely).

Also, I haven't really built much yet; although I've been taking apart electronics and doing small projects all of my life. You are inspiring me to change things though. I want to focus more and more time to adventure building, and I think it can be a great way to spend time with my daughter also. I have so many ideas, and I often just put them away into a, "too hard" or "I don't know how" category. I need to be brave and go for it!

Thanks for being an inspiration, Jaimie!

Nice to meet you too! I don't like shopping much, and don't watch much TV. I gave up TV for a year back in the late 90's and never really went back to it. I do occasionally watch stuff on the internet now though. TV is such a huge time sink...and I just cannot take the commercials anymore (it's like half the show). My wife and daughter watch internet TV too much probably (Hulu and Netflix mostly).

San Francisco -- and Northern California in general -- is a great place for doing outdoors stuff. The temperature is generally not too cold, but not too hot to get a workout (average around 62F in SF). We have a lot of urban park land and national parks nearby. Also the air quality is usually quite good due to a pretty constant wind off the ocean. I do feel bad for our inland neighbors though; as that's where all our auto pollution goes. I hope more people limit their auto use in the future; or use more electric vehicles.

You are lucky to live in Colorado! It's pretty hard to beat Colorado for natural beauty. I visited as a child and have wanted to go back ever since.

Hey Mark and Sky.

Thats grrrreat! Ya, adventure building is a great way to hang out with your kids. I can't wait 'till Aurora can hold a hammer. :-) Umm.... well, ok. Maybe i can wait. That'll be a little scary. So far she comes along on safe adventures attached to me wth one of those baby carriers. I love those. :-) She loves it when i run, and she bounces. :-)

Actually, a big influence in started the club, and defining the values was to give her, and hopefully other kids something to focus on other than stupid TV. I'm sure everyone knows what i mean be stupid TV... as opposed to thoughtful TV. Cartoons are pretty bad these days. Anyway, it also helps me to have something to focus on to be a better person. :-)

Ok, now I'm just rambling on. :-)

I don't actively turn on any TV's, but I do passively watch some from time to time. But I can't stand the commercials anymore either, and most of the programming is a drain. I want to learn and be intrigued.

I went on a 2 month road trip earlier this year, from Colorado to Indiana, New Mexico, Las Vegas, then all the way up and down the West Coast. I was lucky enough to stay in San Fran for a week and a half, and several places in Northern Cali. It was magnificent! I had a great time, met cool people, and like you said, it's a good environment for doing things outside. Northern California has a unique attitude, too. There were a LOT of vehicles up there that were modified, homemade, rebuilt, etc. It was fun being around creative people that don't throw everything away.

I am still in Colorado though, and it's unreal. I grew up in rural Indiana, and I didn't know places like this existed. After I left college, I ended up in Washington DC, then Baltimore and Miami. I didn't get along with the cities on the East Coast. I moved here and haven't been able to leave. I can walk to the mountains, ride my mtn bike so many places, snowboard, hike, run, etc. And so can everyone else, so people are much more active than most places in the US. I also have a garage now, so my building capabilities have increased. Now I just have to find more time!

Until recently my Dad did live in Colorado, so I made it out once in a while. Amazing scenery!

I'm totally on-board with the TV thing. Haven't had one in 5 years, though I try not to be preachy about it. But at this point when I do watch it I get annoyed at how they stretch things out to keep you hanging on (and watching ads) for the whole hour. Much better to watch 10 minute building vids on YouTube.

Just a heads up to any other SF members. There is a place called noisebridge in the Mission. Its a hackerspace that has a workshop, sewing machines, kitchen, lazer etcher, electronics lab, darkroom, awesome people and much more. The best thing is, its all for free! just show up anytime and work on cool stuff with other people all around also working on cool things.

You can find it here if you are interested.
