melting plastic- is it rlly bad?

Postby dante » Mon Jun 06, 2011 5:40 pm

i am melting some plastic.. while i am constructing my stuff.. i am doing it in room like 50m3 of air.. should I wear a gas mask ? cuz i have one, that is working but the filter is carbon, so it should resist every gases etc.. i think ..
and i am just melting it, not burning like flames.. so maybe i can do it without mask? how is it? :geek:

I have read some that gases emitted by some plastics may cause cancer, but I don't know if it is true or one of those internet facts that don't apply to the real world.

First, I don't mean to be mean, but please type and speak correctly. You'll get a lot more responses if you use proper grammar.

Secondly, if you have a respirator, and you smell something you are worried about... wear the respirator. It's that simple.

And anything can cause you cancer according to California. Heck, the sun gives you cancer. SHIELD THE CHILDREN, KEEP THEM INSIDE.

Keep in mind that people on here can be from other countries or the south where English is a second language. Be tolerant:) Of course, it could mean they just type like me. I spell the words correctly, but occasionally use the incorrect word. I type what is easy to type:)

I agree and totally understand if English is their second language.

If not, then it's unacceptable. It's one of my pet peeves for the younger generations.

In case you can't smell anymore, I'd recommend you to wear respirators every time when you're melting plastic, using chemicals when you develop your photographs, and so on. From your posts, I can tell that you have enough technical knowledge to know when you're doing "dangerous" stuff. And 50 cubic meters is way too small. Couldn't you work outside if the weather is OK?

By the way, your English is pretty fine for a Polish person, don't worry  if you don't understand my post, just say so, and I'll try to explain it in a simpler way.

well.. I thought, that maybe it is not so dangerous at all, becouse i am only melting it not burning, so i am hiting up, so the chemical reaction of burning cannot start, maybe .. well i was wondering also if my carbon filter gas mask can protect me or not o.O well i understund thousend times better eng when reading than writing ;p haha an yes i am form Poland ;p
I cannot work outside, same as JAmie i have problem with people that are going around and asking me if I am making a bomb or am I terrorist maybe and what is it, is it safe for them ? well stupid peoples dont even understund me when i am making photography with my pinhole cameras and they look at me with fear and stupid face, once somebody even thought i am selling somthing ... well.. in this country people are like this, , but soon i will go to england so people doesnt even care what are U doing..
:) i must even close window shields, becouse of my experiments, becouse people stand starying and stuff.. hahaha once i ever putted camera on window, what a stunned reaction for them it was(and i recorded that ).. hahha.. offtop ;p

Before you go burning\melting plastics, you should look into Dioxins: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dioxins_and_dioxin-like_compounds
and http://www.ehow.com/info_8210668_health-risks-burning-plastic-cups.html

It may cause all kinds of problems... to you and any near by wildlife. If you think its worth the risk, at least make sure you inform anyone in range that you intend to do it.

oh, and there is this from "ask a scientist" http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem00/chem00038.htm

yes.. thats.. intresting.. :o i felt that it is not so healthly .. well i still dont know if my carbon gask mask can protect me, but i see many unhealthly things are going on.. well that melting in hot water thing is intresting fact, i must make a wentilation or something that will suck those gases out somewhere hehe,
by the way its not so big things that melting looks like this. Image so maybe gask mask (with eye protection included) will be enough
