The Geodesic Sphere

Postby sjvsworldtour » Tue May 31, 2011 5:21 am

I saw videos from Ellen on a geodesic sphere she was building at the Jamius compound. There haven't been any updates in forever. Jaimie, was it ever finished? It seemed she was getting close.

Helped put a plastic cover on the sphere last year, it was still mostly just the frame... not sure if she's done any work on it since.

About 4 weeks ago I feel across this very video on youtube and I still aint done with watching the JME stuff.

I also would like to know where the dome is and how it survived the winter?

Dome interest lead me to the Jamius clan. You are my leader.....

Dome is fine, banana building took a bit of a hit. That's about it. (At least that's what I get from watching the vids!)

The geodesic sphere isn't the dome. It is a sphere that Ellen was hanging from some trees, sort of. I think she ended up balancing it on a rock. It isn't something I have seen in Jaimie's videos.

I know. :D

I thought the guy above was asking about jaimie's dome. Not the sphere. (I'd so make that sphere a cool ride to roll down the mountain in) :D :D :D

I saw a youTube video the other day of these balls that are sort of like tree houses just like what Ellen was trying to do with the sphere. It was on youTube somewhere. I should have bookmarked it. There is a lot of interesting stuff out there.

Sorry, it was the sphere that I meant. Jamies dome should be standing for years to come.

Is this the second time that the banana building has been flattened?

I don't believe the Banana Building has been flattened before. I do believe a tree fell on the dome over the spring before Jaimie made it out of concrete. There are very old videos of him repairing that.

I suspect the sphere was pretty safe. Those things are very strong and I think it was only partially covered in tiles. The worse that would probably happen is a lose tile breaking loose.

I suspect the collapse of the Banana Building was due partially to flaws in the material. Jaimie did get it used, so there were likely already some bends in it that contributed to the failure.

Or the banana building was built for a warm weather climate and was never supposed to stand up to a ton (literally) of snow. Yes the arch is very strong but I'm guessing ones built for warm weather climates have thinner gauge steel than the ones you see with tons of snow on top of them.

And no, the first time Jaimie said the banana building collapsed it was a joke. (A very mean one too, I saw it half way through watching giant robot vids and the entire time I thought at the end the building was going to collapse.) When it didn't, I had to go back and rewatch the "collapse" vid and realized it's an april fool's joke.
