Help: Home Made Solar Panels.

Postby RedhairedDood » Mon May 30, 2011 2:54 pm

As the subject suggests, i am trying to resource as much information about making my own solar panels as possible. I have procured nearly all the materials needed.I would like some help with the box thingy on the back i dont know what's in it and i was wondering if anybody could help me out on this?

I am willing to award 50 Internets to the person who can help me the mostest.

I am getting a licensed electrician to put them together so i wont have the issue of electrifying myself.

Do you mean the electronics on the back? (I really have no idea what you're talking about, find a picture and point it out for us)

Like the box in this picture. If you could help me out on what is inside that box that would be great.

Are you buying the solar panels?

Hard to understand what you mean. Or you want to build them from solar cells. I build 2 solar panels from scratch. Unless you know what your doing to , and have a good way to protect the solar cells. Then i wouldnt recommend it. Give some more information .

i am building them myself, even though i have yet to start. I thought that if i acquired all the parts needed then i could do it safely.

I have the cells themselves(3"x 6") the frames, polycarbonate sheeting, tabbing wire, the encapsulate and a couple other things i cannot think off the top of my head. I was wondering if i could get some information as to what is in that little box that is usually placed on the back of the of panels.

The box on the back contains the positive and negative connections. That way its easy to connect your solar panel to your charge controller.

And most likely a blocking diode.

Are there any specific names for these parts required?

If I understand the guys above... the box only contains terminals (something easy to connect wire to, think car battery or speaker etc), and a diode to protect the cells. You wouldn't want current traveling INTO the cells, right? A diode lets DC travel in one direction only, like a 1 way street. There are TONS of diodes out there though, so someone with more electrical expertise will have to help you decide what kind to buy.

You do NOT need an electrician, they just make you pay $$ for something you can do yourself, and use scare tactics like electrocution to force you in to paying them. As long as you research what you are doing and how to do it, you will be perfectly fine :)
Also the diode you need depends on what you are charging, if it is a car battery, 15v i think plus current which you can test on any multimeter. Have fun solar paneling! :P
