err...so...ya, for those that don't know me my name is Jack and i build combat robots, as seen on battlebots and robot wars. basically RC robots that are designed to destroy each other
Seeing as Jaimie set up this page on the forum i thought i should just point out some of my fairly awesome creations :D i have a youtube channel called teamorr96 (link here: http://www.youtube.com/user/teamorr96) where i post videos too...ya

so i started off with Antweight robots (150grams, 4 inch cube) Image

and a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRdMt_xI ... ideo_title

I just watched RoboWars (or whatever it was called) on the Science channel. It was hosted by Grant from mythbusters and it aired on Monday (memorial day in the US)

These are cool robots, thanks for sharing. Team Orr, do you you have any suggestions for some of us that are just getting into robots and motor controllers, etc? What platform do you use to control your bigger bots, is it open source, etc? I'm sure any tips you have on would be appreciated.

Hey guys
Wow, thanks for all the responses and questions! Glad to get the interest going again.
Robot wars the TV show is no longer aired, however there are even more events going ATM around the world that are not aired on TV (actually that's not strictly true, highlights of the Roaming Robots event at the o2 arena were shown on Dave) And there's a event every month or two here in the UK, i know there's Robo Games (the people that hosted that "Killer Robots" thing with my mate Grant Imahara on discovery) in the states and a few others. Also lots in other countries like Sweden, Japan and the rest of Asia, and a lot of other countries.
I also watched the "Killer robots" thing on discovery, was weird to see so many familiar faces on TV! and i was there last year, next year...next year...
You can get into the Antweights quite easily, they are 150grams and have to fit in a four inch cube over here in the UK, but i know that our weight-class is known as "fairyweights" (how humiliating) in the US and you have slightly different rules. I made a (albeit rather crappy) video on how to make an antweight here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EFkHnm7 ... ideo_title
Theres also a kit here: http://www.robotwars101.org/ants/shop/s ... 7417&id=20
As for the Heavyweights they are a bit harder to get into, as they are just so big and complex, but if your up for it its a great project to get into, but be prepared to spend a long amount of time out in the shed building it! there's no guide that i can find on how to build one because people usually start in smaller weight-class's and then work there way up to heavyweights but i could probably help guide you through it, and theres a forum here which can tell you everything there is to know: http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/forum/
i also have a website where you can ask any questions too: http://teamorr.com/

Oh, and as for other pictures, i will defo keep you updated with anything i do, i found a video of my heavyweight orrion (the picture of the heavyweight i embedded in my above post) kicking some ass at Reading 09': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPyQ-kmhINI
its the one that has the axe and flips the tyre shaped robot out of the ring

Excellent info, and great video! That looks like a sturdy bot. Thanks for answering some questions. I've played with electricity for a long time, but just getting into motor controllers, actuators, and such. Getting in small is a good plan to learn how it works.
